The Tsukuba Summer Institute (TSI) is a week-long international seminar/workshop for undergraduate and graduate students in physical education and sport sciences. It is held at University of Tsukuba in Ibaraki, Japan, approximately one hour north-east of Tokyo. Since the first TSI in 2010, attendees have included scholars, students, teachers, and athletes from Japan, Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, France, Germany, India, Korea, New Zealand, Scotland, USA, and Wales. The 2020 TSI will take place from Tuesday July 9th to Tuesday July 17th. Five programs comprise the TSI — the Collaborative Research Program (CoRP – open to all, but mainly for graduate students; maximum 40); the Sports, Physical Activity, & Culture in Japan Program (SPAC – open to all students; maximum 40); the Laboratory Program (LAB – open to all, but mainly for graduate students; maximum 15); the International Development through Sport Program (IDS – open to all; maximum 25). Participants choose one of the four programs(CoRP, LAB, SPAC and IDS) for the week, but there is also some overlap in that all students attend the daily presentations on different PE and sport science topics that are conducted by visiting international scholars. Participants must be current students at the time of the TSI. However, those graduating in 2020 are also eligible if they are beginning a master’s program at their home universities in the fall. The registration fee for participants is ¥25,000 JPY. This covers the orientation reception and daily lunches, as well as all program activities. Accommodation is arranged by the local organizing committee (budget options are residence-style, but hotel reservations are also made in some cases). For information from previous years, see the TSI web site at http://www.siit.jp/. The formal application period commences in early spring each year, and students who are interested in attending the Tsukuba Summer Institute should contact their department’s TSI representative.
